Our final design sketch is based on the three types of traditional Chinese ceramics, red glaze, blue and white porcelain, and enamel colour, with redesigned ceramic coasters and standing patterns. In addition, we have combined the traditional 24 solar terms of China to give more cultural connotations to coasters and plaques with representative plants, animals, things and auspicious patterns.
Final Design Sketch
We first sketched with a pencil and drew a sketch of the coaster pattern and the standing plate pattern. After that, under the suggestion of Mr. Zeon, the sketch was repeatedly modified to ensure the best design effect.
Final Design Drawing
Enamel design elements are used in this work. The composition of this scene adopts a symmetrical design.
It adopts chrysanthemum, auspicious patterns and other elements. Chrysanthemums are in full bloom during the autumn equinox. Since ancient times, there has been a custom of printing chrysanthemum tea.
Chrysanthemums are closely related to tea culture in autumn.
A large number of auspicious patterns are used on the outside, with bright colours such as gold and orange, which together form enamel-like patterns. We hope to express our appreciation for the autumnal equinox.
Lotus and Tea Pavilion
Inspiration: Show the summer style of "tea pavilion lotus appreciation" with the image of lotus pond,
express the coolness in the solar terms, and echo the summer escape elegance in tea culture.
Elemental analysis: lotus leaves, lotus flowers, tea pavilions, flowing water, creating an elegant picture
of summer tea tasting.
Correspondence to solar terms: the summer solstice symbolises the midsummer season. People use tea to relieve summer heat and enjoy the scenery.
Flowers and Birds and Mountains
Inspiration: Combining the birdsong and flower fragrance in tea culture with the vitality of nature, it
shows the flourishing scene of spring and summer during the solar terms.
Elemental analysis: Mountains, flowers and swallows symbolise the harmony of the tea garden ecology, and the flying of birds also implies that the fragrance of tea overflows and spreads in all directions.
Correspondence to solar terms: Mang seed, implying that the tea tree grows vigourously and everything is abundant.
Preparation of Materials
We bought ceramic coasters and acrylic markers, and used acrylic markers to draw on ceramic coasters to present our redesigned patterns. In addition, we also purchased materials such as resin glue, dye and fine copper wire to make the pattern of the signboard.

Personal work
In this Intercultural Design project, our team members worked diligently, each fulfilling their respective roles to ensure the smooth progress of the project. As a team member, I actively assisted the team leader in identifying our design direction at the beginning of the task. Faced with initial uncertainty, I conducted extensive research and proposed using Chinese culture as our theme. Chinese culture is vast and profound, containing many valuable traditions worth preserving and promoting. Based on this idea, we voted on four potential themes—ceramics, paper cutting, Han Fu, and embroidery—and ultimately reached a unanimous decision to focus on ceramics.
Ceramics are closely connected to daily life, especially through tea culture, which carries a deep historical and artistic significance. My main responsibility was to study traditional ceramic patterns and integrate them with China’s 24 solar terms to design a tea tray and a display stand. After researching literature, analyzing the meanings of the solar terms, and exploring their representative patterns, I created 16 detailed sketches, each accompanied by explanations of the design process, concept, symbolism, and origins. Once completed, I compiled and submitted these materials to the team leader, who then presented them to our instructor. After the instructor selected six sketches, I refined the designs further in collaboration with another teammate responsible for coloring and detailing.
During the physical production phase, I was responsible for painting the Qingming tea tray and the Chun Fen enamel display stand. Additionally, during our team’s field research, I took on the role of photographing and recording videos to serve as research and presentation materials. I also gathered and provided extensive literature for our team’s PPT and blog. With a strong focus on details, I offered suggestions to the team leader to enhance the overall quality of our project. Aside from video editing, I actively participated in every stage of the project and was deeply involved throughout the entire design process.
This project gave me a deeper understanding of the significance of Intercultural Design. I hope our work helps more people appreciate the beauty of tea culture and ceramic craftsmanship. I am also grateful for the valuable feedback from our instructor, which allowed our project to become more refined and successfully completed. This experience not only strengthened my teamwork skills but also greatly enriched my design thinking and practical abilities.
Feedback
Week6
We showed our preliminary design drawings to Mr. Zeon and made samples of coasters and brands. Mr. Zeon gave a revised suggestion, suggesting that we take pictures in combination with the solar terms to enhance the cultural connotation of the design. In addition, Mr. Zeon suggested that we draw more sketches of different compositions, and then integrate and modify them in each sketch to ensure the best design effect.
Week7
In the seventh week, we repeatedly revised the design sketch and finally presented six final design drawings. Mr. Zeon helped us a lot in the design process and finally approved our design drawings. After that, we made the final work together at school, and met Mr. Zeon at school to show him our design work.
Reflections
In this cross-cultural design course, we finally chose to use ceramic tea trays as the finished product, combining ceramic craftsmanship with tea culture to show our understanding of "Everyday Design". The entire design process covers the complete process from research, data collection, concept development to the final product, allowing us to explore in depth how traditional culture can be combined with modern design to create products that have both cultural value and conform to modern lifestyles.
During the research stage, we analyzed the history, production technology and application of ceramics in different cultures, with special attention to the aesthetics of utensils in oriental tea culture. We found that ceramics are not only a material, but also carry people's understanding of nature, lifestyle and ritual. Therefore, in the design, we not only considered functionality, but also incorporated traditional patterns, color matching and utensil aesthetics, hoping to convey a peaceful and harmonious spirit of tea ceremony.
During the design process, we encountered the problem of how to find a balance between tradition and modernity. Traditional ceramic utensils usually emphasize the warmth of handmade products, while modern design focuses more on simplicity and practicality. By trying different shapes and glaze color combinations, we finally determined a tea tray design that has both cultural connotations and modern aesthetics. At the same time, our works are not limited to the visual level. We also hope to let people feel the charm of tea culture through the use experience, such as optimizing the water flow line in details to enhance the comfort during use.
The final product shows our understanding of ceramic tea trays and also achieves the learning objectives of this course:
1. Express thinking in visual form-through the combination of ceramic materials and tea culture, we convey our understanding of daily design;
2. Transform research into design results-from research to the final product, we successfully apply theoretical knowledge to practice;
3. Choose the right media and design methods-combining ceramic technology with modern design thinking, so that the work has both cultural depth and meets contemporary aesthetic needs.
This project not only improves our research capabilities, teamwork and design execution, but also makes us more deeply aware of the importance of culture in design. In the future, we hope to continue to explore how to better inherit and innovate traditional culture in design, so that it can be revitalized in modern society.
Thank You
