LECTURE 6 :VISUAL ANALYSIS
[Visual Analysis]
It is a critical part of visual literacy
A skill that helps people read and critically interpret images.
[PHASE 1 : Observation]
Observation means closely looking at and identifying the visual
elements of a design.
About looking ,thinking and finding good language.
For visual elements.
[PHASE 2 :Analysis]
Requiring you to think about your observations and try to make
statements about the work .
Combine to create design principles that complete that work of
design/art.
[PHASE 3 : INTERPRETATION
In this final phase, your observations, description, and
analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design
work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that
you find in trustworthy published sources.

[Process Work]
TASK 2 (week 3-week 5):
Task requirements :
1. First evaluate, investigate, record and analyze the design works
selected in Task 1
2. Study the design principles and the size, location, purpose and
effect of the design
3.We need to write a 300-350 word visual analysis of the selected
artwork
4.Come up with 3 ideas about how to improve the artwork we
selected

• Title: Deep Sea
(《深海》) – Official Movie Poster
• Artist/Designer: Tian Xiao Peng (田晓鹏)
• Year:
2023
• Size: Standard movie poster size (27 × 40 inches)
• Medium: Digital illustration and 3D animation
• Source: Deep Sea official promotional material
Observation:
The Deep Sea cover adopts a watercolor-inspired style, creating
a dreamlike and emotional atmosphere.
• Main Elements: A girl (Canopus) lies on the beach with her
eyes closed, appearing to be asleep or dreaming. A blue wave,
shaped like a quilt, wraps around her, conveying warmth and
security.
• Background & Structure: The upper portion represents
reality (the beach), while the lower section symbolizes
fantasy (the deep sea). The water blends shades of blue and
purple, interwoven with fish and jellyfish, enhancing the
surreal, immersive effect.
• Typography: The Chinese title “深海” is written in expressive
brushstroke calligraphy, mimicking the fluidity of water. The
English title “DEEP SEA” is in a modern, sans-serif font,
creating a contrast between traditional and contemporary
styles.
• Color & Light: Cool tones (blue and purple) dominate the
image, conveying mystery and depth, while warm accents (orange
and red) add contrast, symbolizing hope and emotional warmth.
Soft lighting enhances the ocean’s fluidity, reinforcing a
sense of movement.
Analysis:
The cover’s composition, colors, and textures effectively reflect
the film’s emotional depth and themes.
• Composition: The division between the beach (reality) and the
ocean (fantasy) visually represents Canopus’s inner struggles
and escapism. The wave-as-quilt imagery suggests a connection
between dreams and reality.
• Color Contrast: The balance of cool and warm tones creates
visual impact and emotional depth, reflecting the
protagonist’s journey from loneliness to healing.
• Light & Emotion: The soft, glowing light gives the water
an ethereal quality, aligning with the film’s unique “particle
ink” animation style. The girl’s closed eyes suggest a sense
of longing, solitude, and introspection.
Interpretation:
The cover conveys the film’s themes of self-discovery, emotional
healing, and the blurred line between reality and fantasy.
1. Psychological Journey: The waves surrounding Canopus symbolize
her immersion in the deep sea, reflecting her emotional
struggles and search for belonging.
2. Loneliness vs. Hope: The interplay of cold and warm colors
highlights her transition from isolation to finding
connection.
3. Reality & Fantasy Merge: The seamless transition between
the beach and ocean mirrors the film’s narrative, emphasizing
its dreamlike storytelling and emotional complexity.

Sketch 1:
Reason:
This improvement increases the interaction between the
characters and fits the theme of the deep sea, which reflects the
direct interaction between the girl and the deep sea world, rather
than just being surrounded by the waves.
Reference :
Sketch 2:
Reason:
1. The flat composition becomes a depth perspective,
which increases the sense of picture and immersion. The girl is
moving forward surrounded by waves and underwater creatures, which
makes the scene change from static to dynamic, highlighting the
theme.
2. I chose the duck swimming ring as the main subject because it is
in the work. Although it is small, this little duck runs through the
whole movie. It is an important carrier of the girl’s psychological
changes and one of the core emotional expressions of the film.

Sketch 3:
Reason:
For the third draft, I decided not to make too many changes in the
composition, mainly in the colors. The colors of the original work are
cold, so I will add warm colors, such as the girl's clothes, to create
a sense of contrast and highlight the theme. I will also add some
other elements such as marine creatures and deep-sea light pillars to
enhance the visual impact, and then change some details to highlight
the theme.

Week 4 (24/2/25)
General Feedback:
Mr. Vinod checked the progress. This week's task made me understand
how to observe and analyze the works more carefully.
Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod's feedback was that everything was good, but some details
could be improved, and he hoped that I could continue to complete my
sketch.
Week 5 (3/3/25)
General Feedback:
I finished three sketch designs this week and got good feedback
from Mr. Vinod. He liked my second sketch better and asked me to
continue to complete it.
Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod thought my second sketch was more interesting, but he just
needed more reasons to explain why he chose the duck as the main
subject.
[Reflection]
Experience
When designing the cover of the movie "Deep Sea", I studied the
visual style and theme of the movie, and tried to use dreamy colors
and flowing composition to express its core spirit of deep-sea fantasy
and self-salvation.
Observation
The colors of the movie are mainly red, blue and purple, creating a
dreamy and mysterious atmosphere. Elements such as water waves and
marine life enhance the sense of immersion. The emotional expression
of the characters and hand-painted style fonts are also key visual
features.
Findings
Color matching affects the audience's emotions, fluid design enhances
the sense of immersion in the deep sea, reasonable composition can
guide the visual focus, and detailed elements (such as the red duck)
can strengthen the theme of the movie and emotional resonance.
