Immersive Video Production- Final Project
Immersive Video Production-Final Project
18/11/2025 - 30/12/2025 (Week9 - Week14)
Production Process
This project was developed as a group of three, where we were responsible for the entire storytelling process, from scriptwriting to filming and final editing. At the beginning of the project, we focused heavily on developing an original narrative that could fully utilize the immersive nature of 360° video. Rather than adopting a conventional or purely visual-driven concept, we aimed to create a short film that was both engaging and meaningful, encouraging the audience to reflect while experiencing the story.
After extensive discussion and brainstorming, we decided to create a family-oriented story set in a future context. In this imagined world, household nanny robots have become a common presence in everyday life. However, they are largely treated as functional tools, with little consideration given to their emotions or inner perspectives. Our story contrasts this norm by focusing on two busy sisters who form an emotional connection with their household robot. Unlike others, they remember the robot’s birthday and treat it as a member of the family. Through this narrative, we aimed to explore themes of empathy, emotional awareness, and the evolving relationship between humans and technology.
The ending of the story was a particularly important part of our creative process, as it carried the core message and emotional impact of the entire short film. We went through multiple rounds of discussion and refinement, carefully considering how the conclusion could best convey the intended educational and reflective meaning. Throughout this process, we also sought feedback from our lecturer, which helped us critically evaluate our ideas and strengthen the narrative structure. After several revisions, we finalized our concept and developed it into our 360° Video Proposal, which guided the subsequent stages of production.
Before the actual filming began, we arranged a specific time with our lecturer to borrow the Insta360 Pro 2 and familiarized ourselves with its basic operation. This initial preparation allowed us to better understand the technical limitations and requirements of 360° filming, which later influenced our decisions during shooting. After considering different options, we chose a domestic interior as our primary filming location, as it aligned naturally with the family-oriented narrative of the story.
During the filming process, the camera was securely mounted on a tripod, and we carefully adjusted the camera’s height and positioning according to the script and scene requirements. Due to the large size and weight of the Insta360 Pro 2, every adjustment had to be made with caution. At the same time, we were constantly aware of the 360° field of view, ensuring that no crew members or unwanted objects appeared in the frame, which is a crucial consideration unique to immersive video production.
Set design and visual clarity were also important parts of this stage. Before filming, we arranged the interior environment to suit the narrative context. For the robot character, which was portrayed by myself, I created a simple headpiece to visually distinguish the robot from human characters, allowing the role to be immediately recognizable to the audience. In addition, we paid close attention to timing and environmental conditions. Since the final scenes took place at night and involved a birthday celebration, we deliberately waited until it was dark to continue filming. The birthday setting was carefully arranged using elements such as lighting, balloons, and a birthday message board to enhance the atmosphere and emotional tone of the scene.
To avoid visual monotony and strengthen the immersive experience, we also captured additional footage from alternative angles and perspectives. These supplementary shots provided more flexibility during editing and helped enrich the overall visual rhythm of the short film.
Post-Production & Editing Proces
After completing the filming stage, we moved into the post-production and editing phase. Drawing on our experience from previous projects, we were already familiar with the overall workflow of Adobe Premiere Pro, which allowed us to focus more on narrative flow and immersive quality rather than basic technical operation. We began by importing and organizing all 360° panoramic footage into Premiere Pro, arranging the clips according to the story timeline. This step was essential for maintaining narrative clarity and ensuring that the emotional progression of the story unfolded in a coherent and logical manner.Following this, we carefully reviewed and trimmed each shot to remove unnecessary or repetitive footage. From multiple takes of the same scene, we selected the most effective shots that best supported the pacing and emotional tone of the narrative. This process helped create a smooth rhythm while ensuring that every scene contributed meaningfully to the overall atmosphere of the short film.
In terms of audio, the dialogue recorded during filming was sufficiently clear, so no additional voice recording was required. Instead, we focused on sound design and background music to strengthen the emotional impact of the story. Three music tracks were selected and placed according to different stages of the narrative to enhance tension and repetition. Special attention was given to the transitions between tracks to ensure they blended naturally without breaking the immersive experience.
For visual refinement, we enabled the VR/360° settings in Adobe Premiere Pro to maintain the correct equirectangular projection format for immersive viewing. In addition, visual effects were applied selectively to transitions and key moments within the film to enhance continuity and emphasize important narrative points. These effects were carefully controlled to ensure that the visual flow remained natural while still effectively supporting the storytelling and immersive impact of the video. Basic color adjustments were also applied to unify the visual tone across different scenes, and final transitions were refined to keep the viewing experience smooth and engaging throughout.
The lecturer encouraged us to further refine the emotional core of the story and consider how the 360° format could enhance audience engagement. Based on this feedback, we confirmed the final script and ensured that the narrative structure was suitable for immersive storytelling.
After borrowing the camera and completing an initial round of filming, we encountered an unexpected issue where the recorded footage was lost. Following the lecturer’s advice, we contacted the school again to re-borrow the camera and reorganized our shooting schedule. This feedback emphasized the importance of data management and contingency planning in production, which directly informed our decision to reshoot the project.
