LECTURES:
Lecture 6 : Typo_5_Understanding

Small differences in sans-serif typefaces affect character.
Comparison shows how stems finish and bowls meet the stems.
These subtle differences define the typeface's character.
The line above the baseline is the midline, and all curved letters will usually pass over the midline, or sink below the baseline, making them appear the same size as the adjacent vertical and horizontal strokes.

Appears symmetrical but isn’t too.Left stroke is thinner than the right. Both Baskerville and Univers show how type designers balance harmony and expression.

Contrast is a more important factor in typesetting, and he can clearly see the resulting changes. The basic principles of Graphic Design apply directly to typography.

INSTRUCTIONS:

TASK 2:

In this task, we were required to express an editorial spread typographically. We were provided with 3 text options to choose. We had to utilise the knowledge gained from the exercises in Task 1 and from other modules in the same semester. We can use Adobe Illustrator to create the headline expression. However, the final layout (text formatting and layout) has to be completed in Adobe InDesign.

First I chose the BAUHAUS style and searched for the following styles on the website.

Bauhaus style‌ is a modernist design style that originated in the early 20th century. It emphasizes the unity of function and form, and pursues a simple, practical and rational design concept. This style was originally explored and created by teachers and students of the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany, and gradually developed into an important school of architecture and design. ‌12
The design concept of Bauhaus style can be traced back to the influence of the Dutch De Stijl, Russian Constructivism and German modern design. It emphasizes "form follows function", that is, design should be based on function and remove unnecessary decoration to achieve simplicity and efficiency. This style also tends to use industrial materials such as stainless steel and glass in material selection to reflect its rational and calm characteristics.

The following is a draft designed by the software I used after my research:

This is my final result:

FEEDBACK:
(week 6 - week 8 ) This week, we learned more about composing articles. Using different typography to make the article look more attractive, and watching the video, let us know more about the use of baseline.
Week 06
General: Mr Max commenced the start of task 2 while consulting anyone who has not finish with task 1. Mr Max briefed us about the details and requested that we began conceptualizing designs for task 2

Specific: After completing Task 1, I chose the 8th title as the object of further research. The first three titles were very common in the class. Mr. Max liked my diamond font at first sight and suggested that I pay more attention to details and unity.
Week 07
General: Mr Max gave us consultation on task 2 design and print out designs for finalizing.

Specific: Struggling with designs, I asked Mr Max for assistance to improve on my current ideas. He gave some improvements to my current designs increasing appeal and ideas. Some ideas were a tad unsuitable for the assignment but Mr Max told me to try and complete the designs so that he can get the full picture.

Week 8
General: Independent study week :D
Specific: Mr Max gave a us a consultation session for people who have not received approval for the 4 designs. Mr Max gave his thoughts and chose the 1st design as the final product, whilst giving a passable approval to the rest of the designs.

REFLECTION:
 Experience
Task 2 proved to be a lot more challenging to come up with designs. Balancing unique designs and readability was pretty difficult. With this task, I learned to utilize more of Adobe Illustrator due to the task restriction. Mr Max also showed me some added functionality to the program as my work process was too slow and could have been improved.

Observation
I was able to come up with more ideas and properly sketch out the ones I thought was best. By putting more thought into exploring the different features of Illustrator, I was able to work faster on designs. Comparing ideas from task 1, I understood the assignment guidelines and typography better and came up with designs without putting excessive elements.

Findings
I need to work faster and search for more references before commencing work.

FURTHER READING:

Thinking with Type is not a book about fonts. It is book on how to use them. It is assembled in three sections: LETTER, TEXT, and GRID, building from the basic atom of the letterform to the 'organisation of words into coherent bodies and flexible systems.   Bitmap fonts are built out of the pixels (picture elements) that structure a screen display. Whereas a PostScript letter consists of a vectorized outline, a bitmap character contains a fixed number of rectilinear units that are either "on" or "off." In a traditional printing shop, gridded cases hold fonts of type and spacing material. Capital letters are stored in a drawer above the minuscule letters. Hence, the term "uppercase" and "lowercase" are derived from the physical space of the print shop.
Outline fonts are scalable, meaning that they can be reproduced in a high-resolution medium such as print at nearly any size. Outline fonts are often hard to read on screen at small sizes, however, where all characters are translated into pixels. In a bitmap font, the pixels do not melt away as the letters get bigger. Some designers like to exploit this effect, which calls attention to the letters' digital geometry. Pixel fonts are widely used in both print and digital media.
Although many books define the purpose of typography as enhancing the readability of the written word, one of the design's most humane function is, in actually, to help readers avoid reading.
